Scholastic Red Is Aligned With Recent Federal Legislation
Scholastic Red has worked to develop a program that is aligned with the reauthorization of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also referred to as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
The purpose of the legislation is to ensure that all children have a fair, equitable, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic standards and state academic assessments.
The legislation indicates that five essential elements must be a part of an effective reading program. They are Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Scholastic Red professional development courses and services have been created with these elements in mind. See how Red Course Offerings foster success in each of these areas. The chart below serves as a quick reference for districts interested in learning how our program meets specific criteria for REA and new ESEA grant applications to better serve the needs of individual districts and schools. |

Scholastic Red Program Alignment |
| 1. Scientifically based programs |
Scholastic Red's professional development pedagogy and individual courses are based on the latest research and best practices. Sources for Red reading strategies and skills include:
- Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children (National Research Council, 1998)
- Put Reading First: The Research Blocks for Teaching Children to Read (National Institute for Literacy, 2001)
- Teaching Children to Read: An Evidence-Based Assessment on Scientific Research Literature on Reading and Its Implications for Reading Instruction (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2000)
|
| 2. Testing, accountability, and alignment to state standards |
All Scholastic Red courses are aligned to state standards and core reading programs at the elementary level. |
| 3. Reading instruction |
Scholastic Red has a wide range of scientifically based reading courses for elementary, middle and secondary teachers. All courses are designed to offer ongoing, intensive support to help teachers become more effective in raising student achievement. Lead Red faculty member Dr. Louisa Cook Moats presented at the USDOE Secretary's Reading Leadership Academy. |
| 4. Teacher quality |
Scholastic Red is a comprehensive professional development solution, designed to improve teacher practice and foster a school framework for teaching reading. Scholastic Red's pedagogy follows the research of Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers, which indicates that effective professional development includes; theory, modeling, practice, feedback, and coaching. |

We know that most districts have a variety of funding sources for professional development initiatives. Recent changes in federal grant opportunities require that districts develop Professional Development plans with specific alignment to research-based instructional strategies and to improved student outcomes.
Scholastic Red courses and services, designed to improve teacher practice and raise student achievement, are aligned to specific funding programs.
The list that follows represents a sampling of the funding sources available to districts for professional development programs. Our staff is available to consult with you on your professional development plan and to assist you with your proposals to any of these or other agencies.
