Red Helps Staff Developers and Principals Work Together To Support Teachers
Scholastic Red Reading Specialists train staff developers and principals in the reading research base, in Red course content and in online learning basics.
Red Reading Specialists train district staff developers to be Red course facilitators. They receive training in how to conduct model lessons, classroom demonstrations, and ongoing workshops, which complement online instruction and provide teachers opportunities to talk with peers about their learning and how it is helping their classroom practice. Red Facilitators also have access to a private online discussion forum that is hosted by a Red Reading Specialist.

Scholastic Red is committed to the ongoing improvement of our program. We continually update and enhance our products and services to meet the needs of all educators and all schools. Scholastic Red's professional development model has been pilot tested in 10 partner school districts across the U.S., including Atlanta, Georgia; Clark County, Nevada; Des Moines, Iowa; El Paso, Texas; Fairfax County, Virginia; Jefferson County, Kentucky; Kansas City, Kansas; Los Angeles, California; San Francisco, California and the New York City Chancellor's District. In these districts, more than 300 teachers in grades 3-8 have piloted Scholastic Red.
The first year of the evaluation of Red indicates that our professional development model is having an impact on classroom instruction. Initial data collection from our first set of pilot districts contains numerous examples of teachers implementing new, research-based reading strategies in their classrooms. The evaluation has been focused on participants' reactions, their individual learning, organizational support and change, and teachers' use of new knowledge and skills.
Continued evaluation of Scholastic Red courses and services will evaluate student outcomes as a result of improved teacher practice through Red's professional development model.
Policy Studies Associates (PSA) Inc., a respected research and evaluation firm that specializes in studies of K-12 education, professional development, and youth development, has conducted the evaluation of the Scholastic Red pilot. To learn more about PSA, visit the company website at .
